U.A.E airline also gains pole position worldwide based on an evaluation by Safe Travel Barometer
Safe Travel Barometer, the world’s most comprehensive database of COVID-19 health and safety protocols, and traveler experience initiatives announced by suppliers which influences traveler decisions in the new normal, today announces an update to its Safe Travel Score for more than 230 airlines worldwide. The Safe Travel Score is an industry-first COVID-19 rating initiative, created in the wake of recovery from the pandemic. For airlines, the Safe Travel Score is based on an independent audit of 26 traveler health and safety measures, along with traveler convenience initiatives, service excellence and overall traveler experience announced by airlines, regulatory and government authorities to alleviate traveler anxiety and boost confidence.
The Safe Travel Score Methodology has evolved since it was first announced in August 2020. The process now assigns variable weights to all the initiatives depending on their importance. These initiatives are assigned to one of the three sub-categories (see below) which in turn have differential weights assigned to them, basis upon their gravity in the traveler’s decision-making and actual journey. The aggregated weights by sub-categories are rolled-up to arrive at the final Safe Travel Score.
The various initiatives announced by airlines are assigned to one of the following sub-categories. These initiatives have either a direct or psychological impact on traveler booking and traveling decision in the ‘new normal’:
- COVID-19 Safety protocols
- Traveler Convenience
- Service Excellence
Emirates, the largest carrier from the Middle East emerged on the top of the leaderboard in October 2020 with a Safe Travel Score of 4.4 out of 5. Emirates’ customer experience for the ‘new-normal’ includes on-board amenities such as face masks, face shields and hand sanitizers. They also ensure the aircraft is sanitized before, after and in-between flights. They also have the most flexible fare rules along with options to rebook even post-two years. More recently, the airline also announced a free 14-day COVID-19 insurance cover for all its passengers.
Etihad Airways came second in line with a Safe Travel Score of 4.3 out of 5, and Qatar Airways followed at 4.2 out of 5. Other Middle East Airlines such as Oman and Air Arabia each scored a 4.1 and a 4.0 out of 5, respectively. Across Africa, Ethiopian Airlines and Kenya Airways each achieved a Safe Travel Score of 3.9. Most notably, Ethiopian Airlines has implemented various recommendations of the Global Health and Travel Regulators and has taken initiatives to also offer hassle-free travel date change and refund process.
Initiatives of 32 airlines based in the Middle East and Africa were evaluated by Safe Travel Barometer, of which 5 airlines (16%) gained a Safe Travel Score of 4 or more.
