Emirates, Qatar Airways Top Global Safe Travel Score November 2020 Leaderboard

Emirates leads for two successive months among 250+ airlines evaluated worldwide by Safe Travel Barometer

Safe Travel Barometer, the world’s most comprehensive B2B monitoring and benchmarking solution of COVID-19 health and safety protocols, and traveler experience initiatives announced by suppliers, today announces the Safe Travel Score November 2020 leaderboard.

The Safe Travel Score is an industry-first rating initiative of supplier initiatives, created in the wake of recovery from the pandemic. Initiatives of more than 250 airlines worldwide were independently assessed by Safe Travel Barometer for the November leaderboard. The resulting Safe Travel Score is based on an independent audit of 28 initiatives announced by airlines, which are attributed to the following sub-categories: traveler convenience initiatives, service excellence, traveler health and safety measures. These sub-categories have differential weights assigned to them, basis upon their gravity in the traveler’s decision-making and journey. These initiatives have either a direct or psychological impact on traveler booking and traveling decision in the ‘new normal’.

According to the assessment in November 2020, United Arab Emirates-based Emirates Airline continued its lead over 250 other carriers for a second consecutive month with a Safe Travel Score of 4.4 out of 5.0. Through its numerous pro-traveler initiatives, including flexible booking options, cancellation policies, multi-risk travel and COVID-19 insurance with every flight, Emirates continues to excel on a variety of traveler convenience and service excellence initiatives. Taking health and safety to the next level, Emirates also spearheaded frequent cleaning of the toilets in-flight, beyond the overall aircraft before and after every flight.

Other Middle Eastern carriers making the cut in the global leaderboard include Qatar Airways, which also achieved a Safe Travel Score of 4.4; followed by Etihad Airways at 4.3 out of 5. The Middle Eastern airlines are the most progressive carriers in terms of traveler-centric policies and implementation of hygiene initiatives, compared to other airlines worldwide.

Overall, 34 out of the 255 airlines evaluated (13%) achieved a Safe Travel Score of 4.0 and above. Among them Lufthansa, Delta Airlines and Oman Air (4.2 each), and seven airlines –Iberia, Vistara, Southwest Airlines, Asiana, China Southern, Air China, Saudia – all got a rating of 4.1. Among low-cost carriers (LCCs), Southwest led the charge followed by 8 airlines which achieved a rating of 4.0. These include Cebu Pacific, IndiGo, GoAir, EasyJet, Eurowings, Air Arabia, Ryanair and SpiceJet.

Based on initiatives announced by suppliers, Qatar Airways leads the COVID-19 health and safety sub-category; Delta Air Lines for service excellence; and Air France for traveler convenience initiatives.

“A number of airlines ramped up services to address the pent-up demand in November. From Thanksgiving holidays in the U.S., to leisure and continued repatriation flights via travel bubbles in Asia, Europe and Middle East, travelers continue to expect airlines to deliver best-in-class services despite the financial strain on the industry at large. The balance between expectations and reality is critical to regain passenger trust and confidence in the coming months,” observed Virendra Jain, Co-Founder and CEO, Safe Travel Barometer.
