Emirates, Qatar Airways Top the Safe Travel Score Leaderboard for the Middle East-Africa Region in November 2020

Both airlines achieve Safe Travel Score of 4.4 out of 5, based on an evaluation of airline initiatives by Safe Travel Barometer

Safe Travel Barometer, the world’s most comprehensive B2B monitoring and benchmarking solution of COVID-19 health and safety protocols, and traveler experience initiatives announced by suppliers, today announces the Safe Travel Score November 2020 leaderboard.

The Safe Travel Score is an industry-first rating initiative of supplier initiatives, created in the wake of recovery from the pandemic. Initiatives of more than 250 airlines worldwide – including 44 from the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region – were independently assessed by Safe Travel Barometer for the November leaderboard. The resulting Safe Travel Score is based on an independent audit of 28 initiatives announced by airlines, which are attributed to the following sub-categories: traveler convenience initiatives, service excellence, traveler health and safety measures. These sub-categories have differential weights assigned to them, basis upon their gravity in the traveler’s decision-making and actual journey. These initiatives have either a direct or psychological impact on traveler booking and traveling decision in the ‘new normal’.

Based on the leaderboard of November 2020, Middle East’s leading airlines Emirates and Qatar Airways emerged as the top airlines in MEA – and the world – with a Safe Travel Score of 4.4 out of 5.0. This is the second consecutive month that Emirates maintained its pole position on the leaderboard.

Doha-based Qatar Airways rose up the leaderboard month-over-month. Among the reasons for improvements in its score include stringent COVID-19 protocols, including disinfecting with ultraviolet (UV) radiation after every flight, coupled with flexible cancellation and rebooking policies to reduce traveler anxiety.

Other MEA airlines which made their mark on the leaderboard include: Etihad Airways (4.3), Oman Air (4.2), Saudia (4.1), Ethiopian Airlines and Air Arabia (4.0 each).

“With every passing month of the pandemic and the rising financial toll on the airline industry, we continue to see the Middle Eastern airlines introducing unique measures to mitigate traveler anxiety. These initiatives definitely go a long way in assuring travelers that their end-to-end journeys are relatively secure while maintaining the highest standards of hospitality,” remarked Virendra Jain, Co-Founder and CEO, Safe Travel Barometer.
