Emirates Tops Global Airline Safe Travel Score In October 2020 | Safe Travel Barometer

Emirates achieves Safe Travel Score of 4.4 among 230+ airlines evaluated worldwide by Safe Travel Barometer

Safe Travel Barometer, the world’s most comprehensive database of COVID-19 health and safety protocols, and traveler experience initiatives announced by suppliers which influences traveler decisions in the new normal, today announces an update to its Safe Travel Score for more than 230 airlines worldwide. The Safe Travel Score is an industry-first COVID-19 rating initiative, created in the wake of recovery from the pandemic. For airlines, the Safe Travel Score is based on an independent audit of 26 traveler health and safety measures, along with traveler convenience initiatives, service excellence and overall traveler experience announced by airlines, regulatory and government authorities to alleviate traveler anxiety and boost confidence.

The Safe Travel Score Methodology has evolved since it was first announced in August 2020. The process now assigns variable weights to all the initiatives depending on their importance. These initiatives are assigned to one of the three sub-categories (see below) which in turn have differential weights assigned to them, basis upon their gravity in the traveler’s decision-making and actual journey. The aggregated weights by sub-categories are rolled-up to arrive at the final Safe Travel Score.

The various initiatives announced by airlines are assigned to one of the following sub-categories. These initiatives have either a direct or psychological impact on traveler booking and traveling decision in the ‘new normal’:

  • COVID-19 Safety protocols
  • Traveler Convenience
  • Service Excellence

Based on the assessment in October 2020, airlines from the eastern hemisphere gained a sizable lead over their western counterparts. United Arab Emirates-based Emirates Airline has a strong lead over other airlines with a Safe Travel Score of 4.4 out of 5.0, having implemented numerous pro-traveler health and safety initiatives. In addition, Emirates also has some of the most proactive and generous amendment and cancellation policies, further adding to the overall traveler convenience and service excellence. These include utmost transparency in communication of safety measures with travelers, including mandatory use of face masks in-flight, frequent cleaning of the toilets in-flight, and the overall aircraft before or after every flight. In July 2020, Emirates became the first airline worldwide to offer free COVID-19 insurance cover to all its passengers.

Other Middle Eastern carriers making the cut in the global leaderboard include Etihad Airways with a Safe Travel Score of 4.3, followed by Qatar Airways at 4.2. The Middle Eastern airlines are the most progressive carriers in terms of health and traveler-centric policies, considering their role in operating repatriation flights worldwide. Their safety and service initiatives are often positioned with a hospitality-orientation to build confidence among travelers pre-, post-, or in-journey, which is a major differentiator compared to European and American carriers.

Overall, 23 out of the 231 airlines evaluated (10%) achieved a Safe Travel Score of 4.0 and above. Among them, Delta Airlines (4.1) was the only American carrier to make it to the global list. Other airlines which feature on the global leaderboard include IAG’s Iberia, Lufthansa, Air China and China Southern; each achieved a Safe Travel Score of 4.1.

“As we enter the holiday season worldwide, travelers expect airlines to go above and beyond in keeping them safe during their journeys. Since our last announcement, we have increased the number of initiatives evaluated for airlines and refined our methodology to better represent the Safe Travel Score. The industry and travelers can now assess airlines’ competitive edge across the different sub-categories which culminate into the Safe Travel Score,” states Virendra Jain, Co-Founder and CEO, Safe Travel Barometer.
