Safe Travel Score for Top North American COVID-19 Friendly Airlines Revealed

Delta rated the best among North American airlines evaluated by Safe Travel Barometer

Safe Travel Barometer, the world’s most comprehensive database for COVID-19 traveler health and safety protocols, today released Safe Travel Score for airlines worldwide, including for the North America region. The Safe Travel Score is an industry-first rating initiative, based on an independent audit of more than 150 airlines and 20 traveler health and safety measures announced, as part of airlines renewed pre-boarding, boarding and onboard experiences.

Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines emerged as the leading airline in North America with a Safe Travel Score of 4.4 out of 5, having implemented numerous pro-traveler health and safety initiatives. These include mandatory face masks for travelers, frequent cleaning of aircraft and most importantly, a commitment to block middle seats through September 30, 2020. The flexibility towards cancellations and rebooking, including a two-year credit note, boosted Delta’s rating.

Allegiant is closely tied to Delta with a Safe Travel Score of 4.4, followed by Hawaiian (4.2), Alaska Airlines and JetBlue (4.1 each). Southwest scored 4.0, in spite of favorable seating conditions of blocking the middle seats for a significant part of 2020.

“Overall, 4 U.S.-based airlines made it to the global top-10 list,” says Virendra Jain, Co-Founder and CEO of Safe Travel. “This is a dramatic improvement since June 2020, when Safe Travel Barometer first highlighted the dismal performance of the U.S. carriers. At that time, the majority of U.S. airlines did not have much (or any) traveler safety protocols in place.”

Jain adds, “The fundamental premise of Safe Travel Score is to benchmark travel brands’ initiatives to reduce traveler anxiety. Our independent rating centered on traveler health and safety measures establishes a baseline for travel brands, while equally offering travelers a glimpse into what they can expect in their journeys.”
