Vistara rated the best among APAC airlines evaluated by Safe Travel Barometer
Safe Travel Barometer, the world’s most comprehensive database for COVID-19 traveler health and safety protocols, today released Safe Travel Score for airlines worldwide, including for the Asia Pacific (APAC) region. The Safe Travel Score is an industry-first rating initiative, based on an independent audit of more than 150 airlines and 20 traveler health and safety measures announced, as part of airlines renewed pre-boarding, boarding and onboard experiences.
India’s Vistara, a joint-venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines, emerged as the leading APAC airline with a Safe Travel Score of 4.4 out of 5, having implemented numerous pro-traveler health and safety initiatives. The airline is providing its passengers with face masks, sanitizers and face shields for their journeys. In addition, frequent cleaning of aircraft before/after every flight and deep cleaning every 24 hours and equipping its crew with PPE kits and face shields showcases the carrier’s commitment to traveler and staff health and safety.
Chinese flag carrier China Airlines and Malaysian low-cost carrier AirAsia followed with a Safe Travel Score of 4.2 each. China Airlines was among the first carriers in the world to resume domestic services after the outbreak grounded its fleet and is geared with several passenger safety measures. Among them, its commitment to block middle seats until August 31, 2020 (at the time of press release) to reduce traveler anxiety garnered it further recognition.
Among other airlines which made it to the top-10 in Asia Pacific include Philippines Airlines (4.2), Malindo (3.8), All Nippon Airways (3.7) and Cathay Pacific (3.7). Three more Indian LCCs – IndiGo (4.1), GoAir (4.0) and SpiceJet (3.9) – made it to the top-10 regional list; their measures driven by the guidelines issued by India’s aviation authority, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.
“APAC was ground zero for the pandemic, and its air space is slowly opening up – one domestic market at a time,” says Virendra Jain, Co-Founder and CEO, Safe Travel. “Governments and airlines are working together across countries to streamline and implement traveler safety protocols in a bid to revive air travel, including through a widespread use of contact tracing apps across China, India, Malaysia and Indonesia.”
Jain adds, “The fundamental premise of Safe Travel Score is to benchmark travel brands’ initiatives to reduce traveler anxiety. Our independent rating centered on traveler health and safety measures establishes a baseline for travel brands, while equally offering travelers a glimpse into what they can expect in their journeys.”
