03 Sep Safe Travel Score for Top Middle East-Africa Airports Revealed
Abu Dhabi, Dubai rated the safest among MEA airports evaluated by Safe Travel Barometer
Safe Travel Barometer, the world’s most comprehensive database for COVID-19 traveler health and safety protocols, has released the Safe Travel Score for airports worldwide, including for Middle East & Africa (MEA) region. This follows the announcement of the ‘safest airlines’ from last month. The Safe Travel Score is an industry-first rating initiative, based on an independent audit of more than 200 airports and 20 traveler health and safety measures announced by airports. The Safe Travel Score is an indicator of the preparedness of the travel industry as part of the ‘new normal’.
The Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) and Dubai International Airport (DXB) were tied as the ‘safest’ airport in Middle East and Africa with Safe Travel Score of 4.5 out of 5. UAE’s prominent hubs have taken several proactive measures to enhance the passenger experience across the landside and airside areas. These include mandating the use of face masks and disposable gloves by passengers, an expanded four-hour check-in window to ensure a streamlined passenger screening, to more rigorous operational processes of frequent disinfection of the terminal building, escalators and common public areas. The Abu Dhabi airport also has installed touchless Fit to Fly check-in terminals and thermal cameras to constantly monitor passenger temperatures at various locations.
Some of the airports that feature in the MEA top 10 list include Doha’s Hamad International Airport (DOH), Bahrain International Airport (BAH), Istanbul Ataturk Airport (ISL) and King Khalid International Airport (RUH). Further, Turkish airports claimed four out of top 10 spots in the MEA list due to the measures proposed under the ‘Airports Pandemic Precautions and Certification Circular’, issued by Turkey’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (SHGM).
Virendra Jain, Co-Founder and CEO, Safe Travel, states, “The MEA airports have played a critical role in the repatriation efforts over the course of 2020. Considering the unknowns of COVID-19, airports emerged as the first line of defense in ensuring a safe and less anxious travel. The MEA airports really played a critical role in easing the passengers into the new normal. Overnight, airports had to upend their operational processes; research, evaluate and implement a variety of initiatives to ensure traveler and crew safety and comfort, while also minimizing the chances of COVID-19 transmission.”
Jain adds, “The successive release of the Safe Travel Score for airlines and airports allows us to piece together a holistic view of air travel, beginning from the airside all the way through on-board experiences. Our independent rating centered on traveler health and safety measures establishes a baseline for travel brands, while equally offering travelers a glimpse into what they can expect in their journeys.”
